World Water Day 2026: Remi Tinubu  Makes Case For Gender  Parity In Access To Water

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for renewed commitment to equitable access to water and sanitation, stressing its critical role in advancing gender equality across the country.

In a message to commemorate the 2026 World Water Day observed on March 22, the First Lady highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Water and Gender,” and the campaign slogan, “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”

She noted that access to clean and safe water remains a major challenge in many communities, disproportionately affecting women and girls who often bear the burden of sourcing water for household use.

“Across many communities, women and girls are primarily responsible for fetching water, often trekking long distances to streams and water points. This comes at a significant cost to their education, health, and economic opportunities,” she said.

Senator Tinubu emphasised that improving access to potable water would not only address basic human needs but also unlock broader social and economic benefits, particularly for women and girls.

“When we ensure safe, clean, and accessible water, we do more than quench thirst; we create opportunities. Girls are able to remain in school, women can engage in productive ventures, and families enjoy healthier and more dignified lives,” she stated.

The First Lady called on government at all levels, development partners, and communities to work collaboratively to bridge gaps in water access and promote inclusive policies that prioritise gender equity.

She added that sustainable investment in water infrastructure and sanitation services is essential to achieving national development goals and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.

“Let us work together to ensure that where water flows in Nigeria, equity truly grows,” she urged.

World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and advocate for sustainable management of water resources globally.
