Nigeria's Power Minister apologizes for persistent power outages, citing gas shortages, pipeline issues and financial constraints. He pledges a 14-day improvement via interventions and debt resolution. He assures of 6,000MW by 2026. He pleads for Nigerians to be patient.
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu hours ego, apologized to Nigerians for the poor power supply and incessant power outages. He acknowledged the immense hardship it has caused, particularly during the dry-season heat.
The Minister advanced the following reasons for the poor supply:
Gas Shortages: The primary reason given was inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants, which account for the majority of Nigeria's power generation.
Pipeline Maintenance and Vandalism: Disruption to pipelines and necessary repair works on critical gas infrastructure have severely limited gas availability.
Financial Constraints: The sector is grappling with liquidity issues, including significant debts owed to gas suppliers, which has affected the continuous supply of fuel to power stations.
Factors Beyond Control: The Minister stated that some factors are currently beyond the direct control of the ministry, contributing to the erratic power supply.
Promises and Next Steps
14-Day Recovery Pledge: Minister Adelabu promised that power supply would start seeing improvement within 14 days (by early April 2026) following special interventions.
Stakeholder Committee: A special committee has been set up to track compliance with domestic gas supply obligations to power plants.
Debt Resolution: The government is working to settle outstanding debts owed to generation companies and gas suppliers to stabilize operations.
6,000MW Target: The Ministry maintained its commitment to achieving 6,000 megawatts of power generation before the end of 2026.
The minister urged Nigerians to be patient, noting that the ongoing challenges are temporary and that the government is working "24-7" to return to the improved power supply.
