Greenplinth Africa and Allgreen Energy NV have signed a major manufacturing agreement to deliver 24 million clean cookstoves under Nigeria’s ambitious 80 Million Clean Cookstoves Project.

The agreement, signed on Tuesday, April 28 in Lagos, also includes a significant financial commitment, with Allgreen Energy and its partners pledging $10 billion over the next 18 months to support large-scale production.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Olawale Akinwumi, President and Group CEO of Greenplinth Africa, described the initiative as a transformative step toward addressing the health and environmental risks linked to traditional cooking methods.

“Today, we are signing a Manufacturing Agreement for the first 24 million clean cookstoves. This project represents a significant milestone in tackling indoor air pollution and environmental degradation,” he said.

Akinwumi noted that the distribution of free clean cookstoves, alongside briquettes as fuel, will particularly benefit women and children, who are most affected by the harmful impacts of smoke from traditional cooking.

He added that widespread adoption of clean cookstoves would improve indoor air quality, reduce respiratory illnesses, and help mitigate climate change through lower carbon emissions.

Also speaking, Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, emphasized the broader implications of clean cooking access across Africa.

According to her, the issue goes beyond development, touching on equity, public health, climate justice, and economic transformation.

“In Nigeria alone, over 180 million people are affected by this reality, with women bearing the greatest burden,” she said, highlighting the inefficiencies and environmental consequences of traditional fuel use, including deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

On implementation, Babatunde Aina, Group Chief Financial Officer of Greenplinth Africa, disclosed that the company plans to distribute about one million cookstoves monthly.

He added that validation and registration processes are expected to be completed between October and December 2026, with the project structured around nine months of execution and eight key milestones.

“We believe we will be about 95 percent on track within this timeline,” Aina said.

The first batch of cookstoves is expected to be delivered in July 2026, marking the beginning of what stakeholders describe as a landmark intervention in Nigeria’s clean energy transition.

The event was attended by numerous stakeholders in the climate change and environment sub sector including Banks, regulatory bodies, sub nationals and the media.
